Second , yes you can wear your shorts during the swim bike and run portion. You may want to do a brick workout in them just to make sure you are comfortable and a little swim wouldn't be a bad idea either.
third, As far as energy food is concerned you have to try to find what is best for you! This could take a long time! I have been doing endurance sports for 14 years and I find something out every race and I am constantly trying new products to see which ones work for my body best at what times and intensities. Golden rule is if it tastes ok during a hard workout then it probably won't during a race and if it tastes great during a hard workout it will work for the race. I have found that to be true. The body does wierd things during races between nerves and everything else that goes on.
Some good safe products to use that I have been pleased with are Hammergel. It is a maltodextrin so it has a higher glycemic index then a Cliffshot and it is a little more pure so it is easier on the GI tract. Plus it can be transferred into a Gel flask and is a little more liquidy than most shots or gels so it is easier to work with. I have found that Powerbars are pretty easy to digest and if need be you can let them disolve in your mouth over a few minutes with the help of some water. Now for liquids this is tricky because some are sweeter than others and some have a 4:1 carb to protein ratio while others are 5:0 and are pure mixed complexand simple carbs. I have been using Cytomax for 8 years now and it has gotten me thru marathons, Half IM Full IM and 150 mile bike rides and 9 hour training days just fine. Now if you have any problems getting solids down I have a little trick for ya! There is a weightlifting supplement called Carbo Hit. It is about 300 calories of pure carbs with a blend of simple and comlex. It is completely tasteless and it can be mixed in to the drink of your choice. I have liked this so much that I now put it into my Cytomax bottles for my long rides and brick workouts. It is pretty cheap like 10 bucks for an 80 plus serving container.
My coach put it best when he said of the 100 percent of the stuff out there 30 percent will work for you. The trick is finding the right 30 percent. With your race coming up you may want to start using some stuff and get used to it or your stomach could be in for a long race!
You may also want to check to see what the race offers out on the course and try to incorporate that just in case you need to use it as an emergency! I will put down a few websites that have some good prices on supplements! Best of luck!
