Message: I will complete my 1st tri on Sunday. Positive thoughts, positive results.... Actually, I've been eating, sleeping and dreaming about this race since I started training in March. I consider myself a cyclist who learned to run faster and stronger last year. (3 half marathons over the winter). My biggest challenge has been to learn to swim while training for my half marathons. It seemed that a tri was the logical outcome of my athletic pusuits. I actually attempted to learn to swim 2 years ago but fell short of my goals. So, Sunday's New Balance 1/2 IM is an unfulfilled dream. For a 51 year old "age grouper" I know that my goal is to finish strong, have fun and don't get injured. I've followed the ontri team for the past 3 months and I have been truly inspired by everyone's pursiut of their goals and dreams. Thanks gang! Good luck to all of you. PS: Wish me luck on the swim !!!!

Message: Best of luck barry have an awesome day and enjoy the day. I learnt how to swim 2 years ago and my first open water swim was in a half ironman ( stupid) but you know what i finished and it was the best day i can remember. Coming out of that water in last position was awesome. my family and friends there and the crowd that had stuck around to see me come out with 10mins to spare gave me a lift for the whole race. once again good luck and most of all enjoy the time

Message: Barry,

Have a good time.
You'll be passing all the fast swimmers on your fast bike.
Save a little energy for the photogragh as you finish.

Message: Barry- you're evolution sounds very similar to mine. I started cycling, did a half-marathon and then thought, "All I'm missing is the swimming" and signed up for my first tri, also a 1/2 IM.

Like Scott, I was one of the last people out of the water (50 minutes or so) but the cheers of the crowd and passing so many people on the bike gave me a boost and renewed confidence for the rest of the race.

You'll be great. Best of luck.

Message: Barry,
I am so glad to hear you have decided for a 1/2 IM and have not let the swimming scare you.
You will do just fine on the swim, don't worry. Just take your time and get there when you get there.
The bike is the longest distance, so you are going to do great coming from a biking background.
Like everyone else has said, you will be passing on your bike the people who passed you on the swim.
Abover all, enjoy the experience...it sounds from what you said (sleeping, eating and thinking about the 1/2 since March) is going to make your experience that much better because you have been patiently waiting and training for this. I am pretty sure you will be enjoying every minute, every second, every hour, every pain (yes, a little scary...) and you will more sore and happy at the same time that you have never been before (that is how I felt when I crossed the finishing line at my first 1/2 IM).

I wish you the very best! May you have a wonderful race, with a good swim, no flat tires and no bonking. Take it all the way to the finishing line!

Please post your story as soon as you are done!
We will all be thinking of you on Sunday!

Jael

Message: Good luck, Barry. You have all the pieces to the puzzle down. You'll do fine in the swim, just keep going and you will get to the finish. After that, you will be in your element with the bike with your biking experience.

Funny what this sport does to a person in that it's all we think about. Ever since I started my training, the races is all i think about and it sounds like you are in the same boat.

Have a great race and take some pictures. You'll love it!!

Message: Hey Barry!! Have a great race. You have put in the hard work and have a strong base for the bike. You will do great. Don't worry about the swim. I am always one of the last to get out of the water and always pass people on the bike. The 1/2 ironman is the best race ever!! You will feel very accomplished when you cross the finish line.

Just remember it better to be the fox (on the bike and run) than to be the hare!

Message: Barry -
...your first tri is a half IM - that is amazing...it took me 12 years of sprints/olys to get up the nerve to attempt that distance - I finally completed on last year - 7 hours/11 min - you should be very proud of yourself. And I love the fact that you are in the adolescence of old age as I am - ahh yes - the glorious 50's - we are in better shape, mentally & physically, than we ever have been because of our great outlook on life - way to go!! I will be thinking about you...just have fun and keep on truckin'
remember to allow yourself to walk/run - I planned to run a 4/1 and that got me to the finish line.
Good luck - let us hear from you Sunday night or Monday morning.
"the race is not always to the swift, but to those who keep on swimming/biking/running!"
