Subject: Total Beginner By: Ralph Hatley Written on: 2005-03-26 12:35:14 Message: I'm looking for recommendations on "how" to get started training for a triatholon. I'm 51 years old, former football athlete who has recently quit smoking and have chosen 10 things I want to do before I buy the farm and this is one of them. I have no idea where to begin...I have 13 months in which to prepare. I want to "finish" the event...that's my goal and I want to be well prepared. Thank you so much for your help and input.

Subject: RE: Total Beginner By: Bob Swift Written on: 2005-03-26 23:33:46 Message: start by learning to swim efficiently, find a masters swim team to help get started, try commuting by bike when you can, start with short runs 20 to 30 minutes, recovery from workout to workout is essential
Subject: RE: Total Beginner By: David Barnes Written on: 2005-03-28 16:48:03 Message: Ralph, welcome to the sport. You say you have 13 months in which to prepare, what distance are you looking at, because training for a Sprint distance (short) is signifcantly different than an Iron distance (very long). Once you decide on a race length, there are numerous websites that have pre-designed workout plans that you can adapt or use as a model to design a completely custom one. Also, I would recommend finding other in your area who are triathletes, or like was mentioned above, masters swim teams, cycle groups, etc from who you can gleen knowledge and workout with. Hope this helps, and good luck in the future.
Subject: RE: Total Beginner By: Brent Struense Written on: 2005-03-28 21:33:19 Message: Ralph... I agree with Bob about the swim. I would add to get in the gym and work on strength training and stretching at the same time as the swim. This will get our muscles and joint firing together. As an old football guy, then you know the benefits of the gym. Just modify from building bulk to lean rock hard muscle with stamina.

Subject: RE: Total Beginner By: MARTIE MARIE Written on: 2005-04-08 15:42:16 Message: RAlph! you have taken the first step to just getting started..that is your decision to become involved. JUST DO IT! START and DON'T stop! Be focused and take rest days if you need them just write down your activities every time you work out this web page has a good training sch. IT is just as important to maintain a good rest recovery as well as 6-8 hours a day of sleep. SO...just do it. Also, get into small runs in your city. Make goals for yourself and reward your self with chocolate...
