Discussion: Breakthrough swim and run!

Message: I am patting myself on the back, after finally making (and seeing) some strides with my swim training!
After a long slow swim on Monday, I was discouraged because I felt uncoordinated, tired, sloppy (overtraining, maybe?). On Wednesday I did some specific drills and felt much better. But last night, WOW! I did some speedwork, 10 x 100s and timed myself. Usually I'm right at 2:00 per 100 (yes, I know, turtles and penguins DO swim!), but lately I had been able to push myself to about 1:52. Last night I swam multiple 100's at 1:42! All of my 100's (except the 1st one), were under 2:00, and usually not close to 2:00, but between 1:42 and 1:50. Hooray! I have a race on Sunday, so I'm resting til then. I have a 750 m swim on Sunday, usually I would hope for 15 minutes for that- maybe I can take a full minute or two off? On my runs this week, I was able to run 30 min easy without walking, and then yesterday I did another 30 minutes, but put in some fast 20 sec intervals. I still didnt need a walk break at all! I ran comfortably at a 10:00 mile, with 8min mile intervals every 5 minutes. Hooray again! I am pumped for this race on Sunday! What a confidence builder!

Message: Oh yeah, I had a breakthru yesterday too... I wanted to prove to myself that I can (physically) survive the .75 mile swim in my next race, so I did what turned out to be over .8 (non stop, for real!) - and in 32 minutes (8 minutes faster than I thought it would take me). I actually did freestyle almost the entire time and focused on form and keeping my ears in the water (I tend to lift my head when I start getting tired). I know for some of you this is no big deal, but I just started learning how to swim correctly last fall and even doing 200m seemed like a long way to go...

Isn't progress a wonderful thing?

Message: Just remember not to hammer it hard on the bike so you hit the run with everything! Good luck and post a story asap.

Message: Stacey,

You are doing so well, glad to hear it.

Sounds like your general fitness level is getting to be quite good and you are now able to use the muscle that you have been building.

I'd like to make a suggestion on the swim. Obviously you are getting stronger which is very important but to get the most improvement to your speed from where you are you will need to improve your stroke first. It takes very litle strength to swim 100 yards at 1:30 if your stroke is good.

If you start training specifically for stroke in the swim then you can use your extra energy on your bike and run workouts.

I hope that makes sense,
Ron

Message: Stacey...

Congrats! You're doing really well and it sounds like you are very prepared for this weekend!
Post your results for us to see! More importantly, I like reading the narrative stories about the races! Those are beneficial for newbies like myself! GOOD LUCK!!!

Becky

Message: Tha'ts great news Stacey!
Ron is a strong swimmer, so I'd give what he said some thought. Last night I swam just 1/3 mile in the pool and worked on speed a little. The result? I worked harder and knocked a whopping 0:02 off of my 100m pace. Hardly worth it for the energy expended. I'm inspired by your success, though - I swim about 2:00/100m as well.
Good luck Sunday - let us know how it goes!

Message: I just read what I wrote above and it sounds like I was opposing speed drills. I just meant to demonstrate that focusing on speed shouldn't be at the cost of good form, which was likely my mistake last night.

Message: Keep up the good work Stacey.

Are you doing any stroke drills?

There tons of different drill that can be done for freestyle/front stroke. Many of these drills will improve your stroke and reduce the amount of work you will have to do. Try goggling "stroke drills swimming".

I luckily come from a competitive swimming background, but still do some stroke drills. Not enough of course.

Good luck, and please let us know how you do?

Message: It must be all the positive energy everyone is exuding... Some of it has rubbed off. After feeling really not so good about my running, I watched my Evolution Training again, and PR'ed my favorite training run by over a minute. Thanks! And let's keep that positive energy flowing! :-)
