Subject: First Triathlon By: Katie B. Written on: 2006-06-07 14:03:53 Message: So I just finished training for and running my marathon which ended up not going so well because it was 90 degrees that day, a 4:46 instead of the 3:30 I was hoping for. It was one of those days where you are just happy to have finished and not end up in the medical tent.
I signed up for my first triathlon, a sprint 400m/15mi/5k, the following weekend. It was just for fun
since I've only been running this winter/spring and haven't biked since the fall. Well, it went really well (at least by my standards). I'm definitely officially hooked! I ended up swimming about 50 to 100m extra on the swim due to wide turns (without a wetsuit) and finished in about 9:26, the bike in 51:29 (17.5mi/hr), and the run in 21:47 (7:02pace) with a final time of1:26 with transitions. It was so much fun! I can't wait for the next one.
Now I'm ready to really start my bike training and taking some down time from running. How far should I start my weekly long ride at? My legs weren't even sore after the triathlon, but I'm still fairly new to biking. I only got my road bike in June of last year and road a few times a week in the fall but never tried pushing it past 40 miles for my long ride. However, now I'm used to running for over 2 hours at a time from marathon training. Any suggestions for starting out? My running group is going for a 56mi ride this weekend, is that too long to start out with (obviously at an easy pace)? Thanks for the input! Good luck with all those races. Its officially Tri Season

Subject: RE: First Triathlon By: Steven R. Written on: 2006-06-07 17:43:35 Message: Hi Katie,
I just finished my first marathon on the 27 th ! 5:02 ! I was thrilled to finish. 4 days later I went for a 40 mile bike ride ( I assumed it was a 18 miler !),but I had been also putting a lot of miles on the bike before that. I guess what I'm trying to say is 56 miles starting back at the bike seems like a lot. Listen to your body so you don't hurt yourself. Heck, it might be a peice of cake for you. I personally find very minimal correlation between biking and running, except for cardio vascular strength. Hope that helps !

was it the Mad City Marathon? That was a tough day for everyone...you did well to even finish in that heat. I just did the 10K, and I was sweating like a madman. I just got sent a link to my pictures for the race and in most of them I look like I'm about to pass out. Congrats on your tri time too.
Paul.

Subject: RE: First Triathlon By: Katie B. Written on: 2006-06-07 18:15:11 Message: Yes, it was the Mad City Marathon! I was about half way into heat stroke by the half way point and had to eat/drink at every aid station until I thought I was going to throw up. My friend helped me through it and we walk/ran the second half of it, but yet somehow I almost look like i'm smiling in one of the pictures. Nice job on the 10k (you were the only Paul B in the results)! It was a rough day for everyone. Paul, are you doing the sprint or 1/2 IM at the spirit of Racine? And Steven, thanks for the advice. I have to get more information on the ride. My legs have almost had 2 weeks rest so that was the only reason i was thinking about it. Even after 2 weeks, i'm already missing those long workouts.
