Subject: Season structure suggestions? By: JK S. Written on: 2006-06-06 22:37:33 Message: Hi - I'd like some suggestions on how to plan next Summers races (I'm in New Zealand so it's winter right now). During 05/06 Summer I did a series of Sprint Triathlons, before that my only Tri experience was a couple of mini-tris. For 06/07 Summer I'd like to still do some Sprint distances and hopefully improve my times (I'm not fast by any stretch of the imagination) but I'd love to complete an Olympic distance event just once. Should I include the longer distance event as my last race of the summer kind of as the end goal, or part way through? Any recommendations?

Written on: 2006-06-06 23:19:12 Message: I'm a beginner myself (this is my first full year), but I think it makes sense to plan your Olympic distance event about two thirds of the way through the season, with an alternate one planned near the end of the year. Things happen (pulled muscles, a cousin's wedding) and if you only have ONE "goal race" for the year and you are unable to participate (let the fast guys compete), it could ruin an otherwise great year.

Written on: 2006-06-07 12:31:34 Message: JK...if you put your Oly at the end, you have all season to build to your "climax" race, and can use the sprints to build your base and get more experience on the way. I like what they both said above, though, about not scheduling at the very end, just in case...

Written on: 2006-06-07 16:05:43 Message: Thanks for the suggestions - I think I'll do a compromise of scheduling the longer event later in the season but still with another event after it incase I either want to do another one or for some unforseen reason miss out on it. Dan W - yes I find it very useful in all 3 disciplines esp transition :-) Speed without Style is just not an option!
