Discussion: From biking to running - a newbie

Subject: From biking to running - a newbie

Message: I'm training for my first sprint tri at age 47. I am equally strong (or mediocre!) in swimming, biking and running. But when I've tried to do a Brick, the running after the biking just seems so hard and slow. I was wondering, since it is the last sport, and I have 2 more months to train, if it makes sense to really focus my training on the running, as compared to the other 2 sports. I'm not a fast runner now, but very steady ....about 5mi/hour. Perhaps I should concentrate on increasing my speed and go longer?

thanks for your advice.

Mary

Message: Mary,

Not being able to run well off the bike could be a few things. First as always bike fit. If it is a road bike then it is common to have tightness in the lower back when you start to run. Second most likely is just not being all that well trained in the run. This year just keep steadily building your base for the run without over training.

Message: well from my experience the best way to improve your running is by doing what my coach likes to call the formula

try to get alot of milage in, without killing yourself that is, and each time strive to go just alittle faster. doing latter work outs and fartleks (15 seconds slow then 15 hard, 30 easy, 30 hard..and u work ur way up to just say 2 minutes for example and then go back down again) also repeat miles as well as repeat hills will get u in shape fast. the basic idea here is to do the mile or the uphill at a mile race pass speed.

if that doesnt help i dont know what will

Message: I like you are even across the board and by no means a speed demon. But my bet is with two months left to your race you can save more time by "worrying" about picking up your bike pace you need to play with your time a little but if your training times are correct and you can pick up your pace a little on the bike you will save more time than working on shaving time off your run. No expert here just my 2 cents
