Subject: ironmanoz70.3 here I come! 151 days to go By: Jamojman . Written on: 2006-06-05 21:27:26 Message: Well
with my first 1/2 marathon completed 3 weeks ago I have not done anything close to training. I've been eating home made cakes, experimenting with home made ice cream and sorbet ( it is winter here now) and as many variations of fruit crumble and self sauceing puddings as I can make. Basically I have been re-living on my running memories. So, I have decided to enter the my first 1/2IM even though I have never done an olympic and there are no sprint races leading up to it. I have finished day 1 of the ontri beginners training program and was wandering if I should increase the run time on the base building part, only because I can run a little further then this now. Any one who has read previous postings will know slow and steady will get me there!
ps
I have no illusions about winning one of the 75 slots avilable for IM Florida.
This is the biggest, most selfish, most indulgent goal I have ever set and on reflection of my previous work out log for the 1/2 marathon I am beginning to understand the concept of the emotional rewards that come from making the journey, not just completing it. Like I said, the most selfish goal I have ever set. An emotional life experience I hope to share in that others on this site have all ready experienced.

Congratulations on making the jump to training for your first 1/2 IM!
You are going to LOVE IT!!!!!!!
If I were you I would just stick to the program...believe me..when you start getting to the 11 to 13 hours training weeks, you are going to wish you were doing 6 or 8 hours (sometimes!).
Also, my assumption is that the build weeks are just giving you time to get prepared for the challenges of the heavy weeks...just my thoughts...
I hear you when you say, the "most selfish, most indulgent goal" you have set for yourself. I can't wait for you to actually do your race. It is so very awesome! You will be sore and happy at the same time! It is hilarious, how much of a high you get into!
Note: was that why you were asking me about my program?
Let me know if you still want it.
I have a paper version, I can put it on a form and e-mail in to you in the next few days.
Let me know...my program was in the Triathlete magazine (I am a subscriber); it gives you long rides and long runs on the weekends with Monday and Friday off for the most part...
Way to go Jamie! My best wishes to you on this "new journey".

Written on: 2006-06-06 10:46:53 Message: Jael, please send it to me at jamie@freshstart.net.au I can never get enough information! I also just looked at the program again and there is a bloody 90 minute ride first week. I just did a 40 minute ride yesterday and my but is on fire! I was reading one of Ron's posts about not having the tyre inflated so much so you get a smoother ride. Any other hints for long rides?
ps
it's -3C every morning now and about 13C top during the day. I thinks I better be getting the wind trainer soon!!
pps
thanks.

you are too funny!
Ok, about the tires being inflated-I was told by my local Bike Shop that your tires need to be inflated to what it says on your tire, whether it is 110 PSI or 120 PSI-whatever that is...if your tires are not properly inflated you can cause yourself a flat tire and your ride will be more difficult because the tires are not doing what they are supposed to,which is to help the bike be more aerodynamic...(again, according to the guys at my bike shop-they actually get upset with me, for my own good , for not having my tires properly inflated (also, you will lose about 10 lbs of air with every ride depending on the length of the ride).
Second: the long bike ride...yeap...get used to it. You will be biking on average of 2 hours to 3.5 hours every weekend. My longest ride (three weeks before the race), was a 4 hour ride (60.3 miles).
If your butt was on fire after 40 minutes..I am not sure what to tell you....It could be the seat, or the way it is positioned? Or maybe you just don't have any cushion on those butt cheecks of yours (mine have pretty good cushion! Ha! Ha!).
Hang in there my friend! It is all about the journey!
I got your e-mail address. I will work on putting that training on e-mail for you and will send it to you by end of this week ( I would do it sooner...but my computer at home is kaputt, and I will have to do it after work at my desk).
Try to go back out this weekend for that 1h30min ride....when is your Half Ironman and where?

just checked the website...It is still developing..but wow!!!!
That just looks too cool!
I wish I had all the money in the world, to just pick what race I wanted to do in what part of the world I may chose and just go at it!!!!!
But, I have to settle for local races....I can't complain though, we have more than enough choices here in Florida..we have enough races to keep us busy every month if we wanted to...
Dan,
by the way...how about an Olympic or a 70.3 for you????
It seems like you are doing pretty well right now....going out swimming in open water and all!...You are definitely heading the right direction!

The ontri training program for 70.3 is great. I wouldn't have been able to have the race I had without that training program. I would take a look at Jael's because it would give another perspective that you might be able to incorporate with the ontri. Good luck to you. Let us know when the race is and we will follow you

Written on: 2006-06-09 10:44:47 Message: Big Jump!! just did the 90 minute ride and after 20 seconds I knew I was in for a loooong ride. But I did it and feel great. I have told everyone I know I am doing the 70.3 so I am hoping this will add some psychological bricks to the mental bridge I will need to build in making my goal succesful. I hope that is not to deep.
Oh no! Don't tell me it is a race update event!! You will all be snoozing your heads off? OH NO! I just checked the time zone difference and it will be 2pm florida time ( not taking into account daylight savings ). I will try to have it finished before you all go to bed. But that's ages away lol!!

Congratulations on the successful completion of your 90 minutes ride!!!!
You'll see...once you get into your groove you will be looking forward to your rides....
I am so excited to hear it will be 2pm in Florida!!!
I will be at my computer (or whatever computer, because mine is going into the shop very soon!) following your results. They had an article on the 70.3 in Australia in Triathlete's Magazine, I thought about you."Jamie is doing it, I thought"....
I am still working on that "training spreadsheet" for you. It looks like I won't be e-mailing you with it until Monday...
