Discussion: Newbie Cycling Question

Subject: Newbie Cycling Question

Message: I'm pretty new (again) to cycling, and things are going great. The only problem I'm having is that my fingers and thumbs go quite numb and then begin to hurt after about 15 minutes of riding. I remember this used to happen to me when I biked (I've been away from the sport for almost a decade) and I never did resolve the problem then. Aside form discomfort, it gets to be almost impossible to shift gears after about 30 minutes.

Anybody with an explanation and/or suggestions on how to resolve the problem?

-Alester

Message: Alester,

I would say bike fit and riding stance. I used to have similar problems and my bike guys said it was from locking my elbows... Can your local bike shop help? Or maybe Jamie B, Ron, and other folks have more insight...

Message: I also forgot to mention that I'm riding a Mountain Bike because I'm currently training for an off-road Du over the labor day weekend. I'm starting to get the picture (from some more research) that this is pretty common (particularly) for mountain bikers since we can't change hand positions.

It seems like the problems are:
1. I'm putting too much weight on my handlebars (will get better as I get stronger)
2. I should be wearing gloves with padding at the base of the palm.
3. I need to be mindful of keeping my wrists as straight as possible while riding
4. I may need to invest in better/differeng handlebars.
5. I need to hit the bike shop this week. lol

Any other advice from y'all is more than welcome!

Message: Any excuse to hit the bike shop works for me too :-)

My guess would be a combination of one and three.

Sounds like you'll get it figured out pretty quick.
