Message: All bummed out. Got my first injury and according to my wife (the PT) the only therapy for this type of injury is rest. It is the part of the hamstring that goes in the buttocks. (sorry forgot the real name). Of course didn't listen to my wife and went for a run anyway. Can't even stretch this AM. Will try some swimming or biking...gotta do something...this is gonna drive me insane!

Message: Listen to your PT. If you don't rest an injury like this, you could lose your entire summer. Use this opportunity to recover (you've been training hard) Take it easy (Does she recommend swimming or pool running?), heal and look forward to a summer and fall of training and racing.

When I had a sciatica proplem, rest did not fix it but this doctor did and fast. I think there is a list of other ACT doctors by city in there somewhere.
For me the injured muscle was pinching the sciatica nerve.

Sometimes we need a little help,
Ron

Message: leo, i know how you feel. I just had minor surgery yesterday and i was told no exercise for 2-3 weeks. This is going to drive me crazy! i pretty much plan every day on what type of workout i'll have and i always feel so great afterwards.....pretty sad that training is my life and now i don't know what to do with myself for the next few weeks. : ( I guess i'll be able to sleep in instead of swiming in the AMs and maybe start reading instead of biking and running in the PMs.

Message: I know how must feel too ...this is a major "pain in the butt" ....literally.
Thanks Ron I will check it out.
My wife will do some more testing later today (those children's birtday parties....), she think it might be a trigger point at the base of the sciatic nerve (or something like that). I might just need a butt massage...lol

Loren, have a speedy recovery....
Thanks,

Leo D

Message: Ron,

Looks like there is an ART (Active Release Technique) ddoctor right in my town. If the butt massage doesn't work i have another option. Thanks

Message: Once you've got a few good opinions...FOLLOW THEM. Hard as it is to take "forced" time off, it's even harder to put up with a prolonged injury. I'm obviously no doctor, but are there stretches or heat/ice that would speed up the recovery? Could you do a little backstorke in the pool (no kicking!)?
Whatever happens, take care, and let us no how the recovery is going. A lot of us are probably as excited for your first race as you are.
Disobeying your wife is always risky, but if she's also your PT, be extra careful

Message: Leo,
I hope one or the other works for you. Sorry I got the acronim wrong I was supposed to be running out the door to get to my open water swim. ART is correct.

Loren,

Sorry you can't go put to play at triathlon for a few weeks.
Heal well and keep your head in the game.

Ron

Message: I would be very careful if I were you. I have been away from training for races for months now. i go to physio and am learning to swim. Just started riding my bike and next week i get to start running. 10min walk 1min run and 1 min walk for 10 and then 10 min walk. Starting slow. This is a long way from what I am used to but have to start somewhere. BE CAREFUL and do what the PT tells you.

Message: Leo,
Sorry to hear about your injury....I feel your frustration but follow doctor's orders; it will only get your back on your feet that much faster (I know, not fast enough it seems for any of us who want to train) and you can get back into your training.
Allow yourself to take the rest you need so that you can get to the Starting Line healthy and injury free. You have been training very diligently, you can take a break if needed. Your body will thank you by doing what it needs to do on race day.
Happy and Speedy Recovery!
I will be keeping my fingers crossed for you!

Jael

Message: Thanks guys,

With some light walking and a buttocks massage yesterday, it actually feels a little better. My wife will continue to work on "the PITB" and hopefully it will continue to feel better. Thanks for all the encouraging words and advice. I'll keep you up to date!

Message: Leo,
Please be flexibe!
I'm not talking about your body.
I've been following your posts since you signed on and have been totally impressed by the way you have transformed your life. There is nothing wrong with a little forced rest to allow for healing and to allow you the opportunity to explore alternate forms of cross training to avoid a truely debilitating injury. Think of it as well deserved rest, and not as a backward slide into your old lifestyle.
Keep posting and tri with a smile.
P.
