Subject: Mark will run his race! By: Mark P. Written on: 2006-06-02 01:11:09 Message: Thanks to my DAD, Larry Phipps, for finally posting that story. I haven't been on my bike since Ironman Arizona because I wanted to be prepared to have NO issues of my own during the Cleveland Marathon. It was truly my pleaseure to offer riduculous amounts of humor during the marathon, even during the six times that I had to turn around and chase my hat in the other direction! Even when the timer at the 20 mile mark blew over as the water splashed off of the rocks below and onto the path (that couldn't be a good sign). We endured by enjoying everything and everyone around us and even taking pictures along the way.
I had the most riduculous outfit on, but I had it all. I brought a camelback with a phone, camera (in a plastic bag, of course), tylenol-type medicine which I encouraged Larry P. to take at mile 18, and other various things. I wanted to run like the wind, not for my own pace, but to celebrate the energy I felt for my dad. The energy was present even though we rose at 5:00 which was 2:00 Arizona time!
Have you ever experienced someone who has attained something completely unexpected? Even though he followed a program that I gave him without a hitch, the end result - those last 6 miles - was still in doubt until the end of the six-mile windy stretch along Lake Erie.
I have been inspired by the elder Phipps and am going to announce my intention (though my superstitions advise against it).
I will qualify for the Boston Marathon. My marathons have become progressively slower as I have done more triathlon stuff. I am hitting the weights and the speed training and attacking this intermediate goal. Anyone who has talked to me before knows that I would like to earn or win a spot to complete the Kona Ironman. Increasing my speed will increase my chances - you never know.
So, the next time, perhaps I will run my own race. But - so you know - MY race will be running a faster race WITH my dad. Instead of 5:05, we'll do it under 4:30. THAT WILL BE MY RACE!
