Message: what's your favorite bike lock? I did a search and see that kryptonite was picked with a bic pen, how do I know if the other spendy locks have flaws the thieves know of, I spent to much to loose my bike but still like the option of having lunch and leaving my bike locked up like a "normal" person..lol.

Message: I don't lock my tri-bike. I ride it and then put my baby in the garage. I've got a beater bike for daily errands.

The Kryptonite is pretty deluxe. I understood that they fixed this flaw on all their newer (since 2004) stuff... (They also offered a lock exchange for the old "pick with a bic" stuff. Seems like nice customer support.)

Message: Regardless of whether you use a cheap bike or your good bike, you can try to lock it in places where you can see it from inside. This gives you a great excuse to have lunch outside or by the window.

I've had a bike stolen before - after 2 weeks - and it killed me (the bike was a gift). Now I'm pretty uptight about being able to keep my eye on it, regardless of condition or replacement cost.

Message: Locks of any kind keep honest people honest. Any lock can be defeated, given enough time and resources. The idea is to do what Dan says and have enough lock that it can't be stolen in the time it's out of your sight.

Message: Bike locks are great but don't rely on them if you decide to do a ride away from home. Thieves will take your lights, bars, pump, repair kit, bike componentry and if you lock the chain/wire through the wheels they can just undo the quick release and walk off with the whole bloody frame ect, even rip off the parts from your bike all because you decided to go to the lake...

Message:
Tove,

My race bike is never out of site more than a minute. I have a heavy old bike that I got for free with a cheap rack on it that is for going to the store. I just use a lite weight cable and padlock to slow down any would be theif on the race bike and on the old bike so that I won't have to walk home.

I have an old Kryptonite that never got used much because it is so large and heavy.

Ron
