Discussion: When do you need gels?

Subject: When do you need gels?

Message: Hello,

I am training for a Try-a-Tri (abbreviated Sprint: 300m S/15km B/5 km R), and am wondering what kind of distances need the nutritional supplements. I know a bit about hydrating (4 oz every 20 minutes?), but have NO IDEA about when things like Carb-Boom become necessary.

Please and thank you for any information.

Message: I would think that if you hydrate and eat before the race, you will not need to worry about eating at all during the race. You may want water between the bike to run . Your body stores 2+ hours of glycogen reserves so plenty to race those distances.

enjoy

Message: With a Sprint you really do not need to worry about any gels since you are out there less than 2 hours. Just keep a bottle of water or water/gatorade mix on your bike and you will be fine.
