Message: Well it wasn't pretty at the end, but I ran my first marathon on Friday. All five hours it took me were an incredible experience. The ontri trainer was a great help! We had unseasonably hot weather for Bayshore Marathon in Traverse City MI. It got up to 85 that day. It definitely had an effect on my body as I was used to training in real cold weather. I just never imagined how physically and mentally taxining a marathon is. I have even more admiration for the people who have gone and done a iron man. I found out what the wall was at about 19 miles. Up to that point I felt I could finish at around 4:15. At mile 20 all I cared about was not quitting. At the end I think people were walking faster than I was running ! I saw three people collapse and require medical attention. My wife and step daughter were getting pretty worried for me. What a rush seeing them near the finish line !

Message: Steven,
CONGRATULATIONS on completing your first Marathon!
That is a great accomplishment!
You should be very proud!
So, the finish was not as pretty as you anticipated, but guess what?
Would we do it if it was that easy?.....We do this because we like the challenge...and you did it and finished despite the fatigue and the heat!
Give yourself a pat on the back, I am sure your wife and step daughter were very proud!
You have just completed one of the physical challenges that only a few percent of the entire world population get to complete!

Way to go Marathon Man!

Note: I heard about the mile 20 being the decisive mile on a marathon. Some people say that Mile 20 is when the Marathon can begin or end....you lived it....
Your story is making me looking forward to my first marathon..it is not until December....

Jael

Message: Nice job...
Great to hear you made it. A finish is a finish, I don't think time really matters for the first one. Now you have a baseline for the next. Awesome.

Message: Thanks Jael and Steve,

I feel pretty well today. I'm still absorbing the experience. Yesterday I hurt in places that I didn't know existed. At the finish, I swore I would not do another. An hour later I was thinking on when I would do the next one.

Message: A marathlon is seriously taxing on the body and mind. Congatulations on being able to dig deep and get it done.

It takes very strong will to do it.

Message: Great Job !! I can certainly relate to your experience. I think the best thing you did was not giving up. In my prior marathon experience, I fought cramps, and arch pain but I decided not to give up b/c I had put too much time into training (and telling others I was going to do a marathon). The end wasn't pretty but I ended on my own two feet.. way to go. Sooooo when is your next marathon?

Message: Thanks for the words Ron, Dan and Asabi. No plans yet for the next one. I just trying to figure out what tris I want to do this season. The bad part of living in the Northern climates is the really sort tri season.

Message: congrats!
i was at bayshore too, but i waited too long to sign up, so i could only do the 10K. it was certainly a hot one, and all everyone running the 10K talked about was how hard it must have been for you marathoners! but honestly, we have to take the unseasonabley warm weather while we can get it here in good 'ol northern michigan!

Message: Yeah Theresa,

We sure do have to take the nice weather while its here. Bayshore was such a great run. I just loved the views. The only negative with the race is that it's hard getting the miles in during Feb and March.l
