Message: I am new to Tris and do not have any of the gear. I am looking online at all of the different apperal. I am surprised at the expense of the shorts and tops. WHat should I do for my first tri? I am not sure how much money I want to spend for my first one.

Message: Ginger - Welcome!

For your first Tri, don't worry about anything. The fancy clothing, wetsuits, bikes and all the other a$$orted gear will come later. I looked at your profile and it looks like you'll be signing up for a sprint or less... You will be surprised at what some people wear / ride. If you wear your bathing suit for the entire event, you'll be fine. If you want to pull on a technical t-shirt (google "Wicking" or something for modesty, fine. Use this race as an opportunity to learn all you can. Watch everyone on the beach, on the bike, on the run and how they set up their transition areas. Just finish this race with a smile and you'll be pumped and ready for the next one. If you have an opportunity to go and watch / volunteer at another race before your first, it would help to prepare you for your first (of what will likely be many!)

Good luck, you've joined a great website that will offer you lots of support in your efforts. Keep us posted...

Brad

Message: Ginger,

For my first tri, I was more worried about my clothes than the training and I do not recommend that approach. I looked great as I bonked and walked half of the 5k. I also made a major mistake thinking that I could wear a swimsuit then add bike shorts for the bike. I couldn't get the bike shorts on over my wet legs and hips and was so long in transition that a volunteer came over to ask if I was ok. So I don't recommend that either. The second one i did, I bought a one piece suit for everything and I liked it a lot. It cost 80 bucks. But I had to make a pit stop and found it to be a nightmare in the port a potty. So this year... I am wearing a 2 piece and I have it already and am training in it so I don't have any surprises on race day. Good luck.

By the way, the first two tri's all the gear I had was on old 10 speed Schwin World that I borrowed from my girlfriend, and new running shoes, and the clothes that I mentioned. This year.. my third.. I have a new bike, new aero bars, new clipless pedals, gps heartrate monitor and a two piece tri suit. My husband didn't balk at one purchase since I waited 2 seasons and am fully committed to training and improving. I definately paid my dues on that old Schwin, lol.

Message: Ginger,

I do the entire race in a jog bra and spandex shorts. Everything cost me like $20 at Walmart. Luckily, I have either a good saddle or a nicely padded tush that doesn't require tri shorts until about the 30 mile range on the bike. Honestly, though, anything goes. I've seen knee length jean shorts...

Message: Without a photo I can't tell whether this will be an issue for you, but if you carry anything more than an a-cup a good sports bra is essential. Many of them are cosmetic enough to wear as a top anyway, and bouncing through the run section is not a good look, apart from the discomfort.
