One it will make you more buoyant thus taking less toll on your body since it won't have to work to keep you afloat you will be able to focus more on forward proopulsion. Second if the water is cold then it will keep your body warmer and the water that gets into your suit will be closer to your body temperature. Third it is scientifically proven that by wearing a wetsuit your heart rate is lower after the swim than those people not wearing wetsuits (see reason 1).
