Message: I'm looking for a challenge and have deceided to go for it with a triathalon. Big problem! I have no idea where to begin. I'm familiar with running but have no experience swimming, or biking (both just recreational). I cant afford a gym I workout at home. I have a mountain bike very light can that be used? Will it make the race much more diffiucult? Please any info would be great.

Message: Go for it Lisa!I was in your same shoes 4 weeks ago. Now I'm signed up for my first sprint triathlon in June, and I can't wait.My advice is to go to Borders Books or large bookstore and grab book. There are a bunch of really good ones for people just like us that tell you everthing you need to know from how to train and what to expect and what equipment is needed. You came to the right place. You will find out how friendly and willing to help these guys are.Read as much as you can.My wife is always telling me thats all I do is read when I'm home.Your mountain bike will be fine but you should put some slick tires on it.Good luck and go for it!

Message: Have fun. That's the main thing. My first race I came in dead last. It was horrible but awesome. I knew half way through the race that I needed a good bike and needed a clue on how to swim efficiently. So enjoy it. If you can swim freestyle already then you are in good shape. I did my first race on my back and got smoked- literally.

If you get addicted to the sport there are some great books out there. The latest one I like the most right now is the Triathlete's training bible by Joe Friel. He has a great training program with nutrition advice... the works.

For right now, just enjoy it. If you get really hooked then pony up the cash for a good bike- it really does make a difference (I mean as compared to a mountain bike- some people spend like $1000 for disc wheels... I am not to the point where I can justify shaving a couple of minutes off of a 40K bike split for that price- my wife would kill me).

Most beginners I have talked to really get freaked out over the swim. Get some confidence out in the water. Get used to not seeing lane lines under you- I had to race a few times before I wasn't spooked looking into a brown abyss when swimming.

It is a rush, and a lifelong pursuit of excellence. Triathlon is a great hobby.
