Discussion: terrified of clips...

Subject: terrified of clips...

Message: I am trying to gain some speed on my bike (since I will never run that fast and am hoping to do a 1/2 IM in fall)...I am going to look into aero bars, having read all the informative postings about them here. I was thinking about clips, but I am terrified of them. IN order for my knees to be in a good position on my bike, I had to raise my seat quite a bit--this means that when I stop, I have to dismount to touch the ground. The problem with this is that I don't have enough space between my headset and my seat to dismount smoothly and comfortably (and my shorts always get stuck on the saddle!). So, I am afraid that if I am clipped in, I won't be able to unclip, dismount and touch down before I fall over into traffic....any advice?
Thanks!

Message: Practice! clip on side in and leave the other out. Rotate sides. Practice on in a safe place until you feel comfortable. I learned clips while mt. biking. I feel over about 100 times and almost gave up. Now I don't remember not using clip in pedals.

The advantage is that you can pull up as well as push down. This give you an enormous boost in both efficiency and speed.

Clips are like putting your seatbelt on in the car... do it for a couple of weeks and you won't even notice them any more.

Message: I have to dismount to touch the ground, too. I practiced the clipping in and out on my trainer over the winter before I braved the roads and even now still have the odd panic moment. I have done 1/2IM with the clips, but now much prefer the clipless and wonder how I ever lived without...

Message: I would reccomend the speed play pedal. One time I actually had my foot clipped out as I came to a stop then as I was going to put my foot down I accidentally steped on the pedal and clipped in and was still able to get clipped out without tipping over they are very quick and easy to get out of. The thing with these is they must be lubricated with a dry lube frequently.

I hope this helps.

Message: You can set the tension on your pedals to make them easier to pop out of when you need to. Everyone who goes clipless will eventually tip over. When you stop, you can still remain over your seat if you just lean the bike over to the side your clipped out of. Just be careful if you do as most shoes don't have a good grip on the ground. Or if you practice enough you can learn to track stand, where your still clipped in but are balancing on you bike at a complete stop. I still haven't quite got the hang of that yet.

Message: The Look 5.1 set has an adjustable knob for your float that you can set to 0/3/6/9 degrees w/o a tool. It has a large pedal and cleat surface for comfort and easy to clip in and out of.

While having never used the speedplay, Ron, like my neighbor, swears by them for easy quick mounts and dismounts. Weird thing is that the pedal does not intuitively look that easy to master but two reviews in their favor is a good thing.

Message: I fell over when I first got my Shimano clips on bottom of shoes, and discovered they were too tight. Loosen for lots of float for learning. I have to dismount to touch the ground. Usually not a problem, as I lean the bike towards unclipped side. Love them now, and cannot ride a bike unless my shoes are clipped in. Pulling up for ascents really helps my speed, and uses different muscles. Have ridden 500 miles this month ,so as you can tell, I am really used to clips. Biker Momma
