Message: I am laying down some base training time in the off season (about 8 hours per week) and have had the worst asthma symptoms... I live in smog filled Salt Lake City (we have inversions here in the winter time) and my doc. has given me advair, albuterol, singulair- to no avail. I don't want to cut back on the training- any folks out there with asthma who train for triathlons who have advice? I am all ears. I have a friend who is a physiologist who put me on flaxseed oil and fish oil. I am doing that and have done so for 4 days. He says in 21 days I will see some improvement. I am open to any and all suggestions. Thanks

Message: I have the same problem and live in Northern Wisconsin. My advair is 250/50 twice a day. I was on 100/50, but didn't work when I started swimming. Singulair 10 mg, nasalcorts, and combivent. The combivent I have doubled up on and it seems to be doing the trick. Combivent has albuterol in it and more. It is better than Albuterol per my doctor. This is working for me, but I still have small triggers of asthma.

Message: Just a thought, but have you considered acupunture for this?

Message: No- I know absolutely nothing whatsoever about acupuncture. The flaxseed oil/fish oil seems to have helped the symptoms to lessen a bit. My friend also said I should cut the sugar- I can't say I have done too great on this- but on lower sugar days I seem to feel better- but I just don't know.

Message: Yes, I have read in "The Yeast Connection" that Asthma is a candida derivative. By cutting the sugar the candida will not grow. Spoke to an accupunturist and he said this can be very effective in treating asthma. I used to live in Heber City, and I know SLC has a great alternative medicine community. Your massage therapist or chiropractor ought to be able to refer you to one. There is a DC that does some amazing Applied Kinesiology things and diet stuff....Steven Elmor. Just a little south of SLC, he may be a good resource. Good luck.

Message: I've never heard that sugar thing. That's interesting. I use Q-Var for daily treatment and like Deb, I use Combivent instead of just albuterol before/during workouts. For the most part, I only feel the asthma now during really tough swim workouts or if I'm sick and still trying to put in a workout.
