Message: I would like to do a mini triathalon in the Denver area. How do I start training? Swimming and cycling have always been easy for me, but running is my challenge. Any ideas to motivate?

Message: Get a running partner, or join a club. I think that if running is your challenge you should focus on that area. Being in SLC, I know how lame it is to train for the run in Feb-March so I bought a treadmill. Now every day is 60 degrees. You can't beat it. Log your workouts. That has motivated me to not skip too many days. Go for "easy" runs where you don't run too hard, but you just run- just for the sake of breathing the outdoor air.

Also, I got an mp3 player a year or so ago and found I enjoy my runs if I can listen to some really fast music- it breaks the monotony up a little bit. Probably my number one motivation is that I want to beat this local guy who always seems to beat me by like a minute in every olympic distance race. I can't explain it, but it is so addicting to do better each year, even if it is only by 3 minutes- that is a huge motivator. Once you do a couple of these, you will have so much fun that you won't ever want to stop racing- I saw a guy at a race in Idaho last year who was like 80 years old and he ran a sub 45 minute 10K off the bike. It was awesome. Good luck!

Message: This may not be possible for you but I found that a big dog who has to get exercise is a get motivator. He brings me the leash and "hounds" me until we go run.

Message: Near where I live there is a running store that has a run club that runs twice a week. They also run clinics... That will get you going and help you find your run buddies...

Message: Shelly-

Where are you in Denver? I know there are running clubs all over here. I am planning my first Tri this summer, The Danskin. I have been reading some books by Sally Edwards which have a lot of information on Tri's in general and training.

Look at their "Couch to 5K" running plan. It may seem a little too easy for you so adjust the training as you see fit, but do not overdue it. You do not want to risk injury, mainly shin splints, due to over training. There are a bunch of little muscles that need to get stronger as you progress in your running schedule, and even though you may be ready, they may not be. Read up on stretching exercises as they are the most important part of staying injury free. Prevention is the best method. Good luck.
