Subject: how to stick to training while traveling?

Message: I am following the training plan on ontri for my first sprint in Sept. My work requires me to travel fairly often, sometimes for several days at a time, plus I have the inevitable summertime travel over the next few months.

How do you adjust the training plan when traveling? You can run pretty much anywhere, and hotels often have fitness equipment/exercise bikes, but even that's not always available since I am not always making the hotel choice. Very rarely is swimming available to me during business travel. This is of particular concern because swimming is definitely my weakest link at this point.

Does it make much of a difference to just swap days and do a run instead of a swim and then make-up the swim later on a run day when I am back to my regular pool? This may end up meaning in some cases that running is the only option available to me for several days consecutively. So do I then compensate by not running for several days upon return home, or do I just pick up with the regular plan?

Any advice??

Message: My advice would be to join a local YMCA. You should be able to use your membership at any YMCA you travel to. Most YMCA's have a pool and all of them should have stationary bikes to ride.

Message: Even without traveling, I haven't been able to stick to the scheduled days. The biggest thing for me has been weather (I'm a wimp, and genearlly don't ride in the rain.) So, all I do is figure out how many sessions I've got for the week, and how long each is supposed to be. From there, I figure out where I can put them during the week. The only thing I try to do is give myself recovery from longer runs, so the day after a longer run, I'll have a rest day or a swim day. I think if you've got planned travel days, you can move your workout schedule so that you've got run and rest days on travel days, and get the other workouts in when you're home.
